Dental hygiene is important because it involves brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, it also means visiting your oral dental hygienist habitually. At Dentistry on Manning Dental Clinic we have two Dental Hygienists experienced in providing an additional level of preventative care. A registered dental hygienist (RDH) is a licensed dental professional who specializes in techniques that focus on good oral hygiene. Regular appointments with a hygienist ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy, and allows for early detection to prevent future dental problems from emerging.
These are the services provided by our hygienists:
Preventive services to promote and maintain good oral health.
Therapeutic services which are treatments meant to stop disease and maintain healthy tissues in the mouth.
Educational services to help patients develop habits and behaviours that promote better oral health.
Professional Cleanings (also known as prophylaxis), scaling and root planning for patients with periodontal disease.
What does professional dental cleaning involve?
Your cleaning appointment will include the following:
Dental hygiene assessment
Removal of plaque:
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums.
Stain Removal/Teeth polishing:
Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling. At your dental hygiene appointment, your Hygienist will scale your teeth to remove tartar build-up and polish the surface of your teeth thus, removing minor stains.
Removal of Tartar:
Tartar is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Tartar forms above and below the gum line and can best be removed with special dental instruments used by your Dental Hygienist.
